The Blessed Margaret Family Help Center, Inc. has begun a pilot program in
the Cincinnati area to provide in-home tutoring to home schooling
families. The program works like this: a qualified tutor
visits the home 1, 2, or 3 days a week during the school year. The
tutors are providing the curriculum at present but this doesn't
necessarily have to be the case. Our tutors could work with your
curriculum as well. The tutors spend 2 to 4 hours in the home during
each visit, explaining the new assignments, answering questions, and
giving tests. They leave assignments to cover the period until the
next in-home visit. You serve as the teacher/proctor in the
between-visit period. We have one tutor who is presently teaching
kindergarten for 2 families and one tutor who is teaching the Freshman
year of high school to two different families. We are currently
providing tutors for only school subjects but we are working at
contracting with people knowledgeable in all skill areas in what you might
call, Catholic home life. We will begin with in-home piano lessons
but hope to provide tutors for these, and other subjects as well:
- violin
- guitar
- sewing
- cooking
- carpentry
- electrical work
- plumbing
The rates are reasonable,
we charge a flat rate per hour, the current rate for in-home school
subject tutoring is $12 per hour along
with a mileage charge based on the round trip distance from the tutor's
home to yours. We charge a sliding scale: 1 to 10 miles is 25 cents
per mile with a minimum daily charge of $1, 10+ to 20 miles is 20 cents
per mile, and 20+ to 100 miles is 16 cents per mile. After 100
miles, you are pretty well beyond our coverage, sorry!
At present, we don't charge for text books which are on loan unless you
damage the books which we of course would expect you to cover. Any
copying charges are your responsibility.
The school year consists of 4 9-week quarters. The first 8 weeks
are the instructional period of the quarter with the 9th week being for
finals. The tutor doesn't visit during finals week.
What are your responsibilities? You provide a useful learning
setting, whether it's a separate classroom with desks or your kitchen
table. You are responsible for the discipline, so if little Johnny
gets out of line, it's your responsibility to take care of him. You
see that the assignments are done on-time and neatly. You make sure
that your child is applying himself and using the time between visits
productively.
Simple, huh? We have four families that we are working with at
present at we'd love to help you with your home schooling. Contact
